To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many juveniles are currently being detained under the provisions of section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act of 1993 at the latest date for which figures are available. [37189]

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Alun Michael, dated 23 October 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many juveniles are currently being detained under the provisions of section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act of 1993 at the latest date for which figures are available. The total number of children and young persons aged under 18, detained under section 53 on 17 October 1995 was 306. Of these, 201 were held in young offender institutions run by the Prison Service and 105 in local authority community homes or in a Youth Treatment Centre run by the Department of Health.
