To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what special measures have been put in place to detect fraudulent application for mandatory awards in respect of full-time students. [37067]

Responsibility for making mandatory awards rests with local education authorities, and it is for them to ensure that adequate systems and controls for making payments are in place. The Department is currently providing funds to enable the universities and colleges admissions service to purchase a computer system which will help it to identify fraudulent applications for places at higher education institutions which are often made concurrently by those fraudulently applying for awards.
