To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement regarding delays in modernisation of the west coast main line. [37114]

Mr. Watts

The modernisation is progressing well and the evaluation of tenders for developing the train control system will begin shortly with a contract to be let early next year. Work is also at an advanced stage on the strategy for the main implementation contract and this will be let in 1996.
