HC Deb 16 October 1995 vol 264 c174W
Rev. Ian Paisley

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the amount of financial support Her Majesty's Government distribute to Queen's university, Belfast and the amount of additional financial support Queen's university receives from the European Union. [37209]

Mr. Ancram

In the 1993–94 academic year, the latest year for which figures are available, the Queen's university of Belfast received financial support amounting to £55.8 million directly from central Government sources and additional support amounting to £6.4 million from the European Union.

Rev. Ian Paisley

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his policy in respect of playing the national anthem at graduation ceremonies at Queen's university, Belfast. [37361]

Mr. Ancram

The Queen's university, as with all other universities in the United Kingdom, is an autonomous and independent body, and as such is responsible for its own internal affairs, practices and procedures. The playing of the national anthem at graduation ceremonies is not a matter of Government policy; it is entirely for the university authorities to determine.
