Mr. Rooker

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish statistics maintained under health and safety at work regulations of the number of accidents involving vehicles during the driving test; and if he will include statistics in respect of(a) vehicles written off, (b) injuries to examiners and (c) absence from work of examiners as a result of injury while carrying out the driving test. Between 1 April 1995 and 30 June 1995, there were 72 accidents involving vehicles during the driving test which resulted in injury to driving examiners. These were:

Back pain 1
Neck pain 18
Headache 2
Shock 4
Multiple 3

  • 20 per cent. of these required medical treatment; broken down into:
  • 35 per cent. Hospital treatment
  • 56 per cent. GP treatment
  • 6 per cent. First aider treatment
  • 3 per cent. Physiotherapist treatment
  • DSA has no details of vehicles written off during the driving test.

As a result of the above accidents driving examiners were absent for a total of 1,320 days during this period.
