HC Deb 29 November 1995 vol 267 cc703-4W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make it his policy to review legislation to give more powers to local authorities and health boards to enable them to introduce stricter controls on registration of nursing homes and residential homes; and if he will make a statement. [2958]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 28 November 1995]: A Scottish Office working group, which includes representatives of local authorities, care home owners' associations and users, is currently considering residential home registration and inspection issues, including the current legislative arrangements. National standards for the registration and inspection of nursing homes will be the outcome of a project funded by the health board general managers' group.

We shall consider all recommendations from these groups, which would help ensure the continued protection of the potentially vulnerable people cared for in these homes.
