HC Deb 29 November 1995 vol 267 cc707-8W
Mr. Steen

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list the annual income of the employment agency licensing division arising from(a) fees, (b) charges and (c) fines; what was the total number of staff employed (i) part time and (ii) full time; and what contribution his Department has made towards the annual running costs in each of the past three years. [2751]

Mr. Lang

[holding answer 28 November 1995]: The licensing requirements of the Employment Agencies Act 1973 were abolished on 3 January 1995. Fees for licenses issued under the Act and fines imposed by magistrates courts for offences against the Act were paid to the Consolidated Fund. They could therefore not be set against departmental expenditure.

Fees paid £million Fines imposed £thousands
1992–93 1.7 1.9
1993–94 1.7 3.2
1994–95 11.4 1.1
1 To 3 January 1995 only.

Staff employed on administering the 1973 Act in 1992–93 and 1993–94 were 50.5 and 51.5 respectively. During 1994–95 the number fell to 35. The number of part-time staff did not exceed five at any time in the three years.
