HC Deb 28 November 1995 vol 267 c567W
Mr. Tracey

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if a local authority must include on its register of stray dogs information derived from(a) a tattoo, (b) an identification tag or collar and (c) a microchip which is carried by a stray dog; and if he will make a statement. [3425]

Mr. Clappison

The Environmental Protection (Stray Dogs) Regulations 1992 (SI 1992 No 288) set out what information a local authority must include in its register of stray dogs. This contains specific mention of information from tattoos, tags and collars, but does not include specific mention of microchips. The local authority must, however, take reasonable steps to include any information which is carried by the dog. The interpretation of these regulations is ultimately a matter for the courts.
