The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of additional prison places expected to be available by the end of 1995–96.The Certified Normal Accommodation available for uses in prisons in England and Wales on 23 November 1995 was 51,328. Some 1,600 additional places are currently expected to be available by the end of March 1996.
