§ Mr. KirkhopeWe have received a number of such representations. The national lottery charities board is responsible for distributing part of national lottery proceeds allocated for charitable expenditure. My right hon. and learned Friend has issued directions to the board. These require it to take into account the need to ensure over time the distribution of money to a reasonably wide spread and range of recipients, including small organisations and those operating purely at a local level. The board—after consultation with the sector, including animal welfare charities—has announced themes for 665W future grant rounds which reflect this direction. Animal welfare charities are welcome to apply for grants, and in doing so will no doubt take account of the programme announced by the board.
