HC Deb 28 November 1995 vol 267 cc663-5W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what plans he has to ensure that applications from animal welfare charities for lottery funding are considered; [2318]

(2) what representations he has received from animal welfare charities on the allocation of funds arising from the national lottery. [2319]

Mr. Kirkhope

We have received a number of such representations. The national lottery charities board is responsible for distributing part of national lottery proceeds allocated for charitable expenditure. My right hon. and learned Friend has issued directions to the board. These require it to take into account the need to ensure over time the distribution of money to a reasonably wide spread and range of recipients, including small organisations and those operating purely at a local level. The board—after consultation with the sector, including animal welfare charities—has announced themes for future grant rounds which reflect this direction. Animal welfare charities are welcome to apply for grants, and in doing so will no doubt take account of the programme announced by the board.
