To ask the President of the Board of Trade who are the new trustees of the NCB superannuation fund; what are their qualifications and backgrounds; what they are each being paid as trustees; and who selected them. [2495]

The current trustees of the British Coal staff superannuation scheme are:

  • Mrs. S. Gleig (chairman)
  • R. Dennis
  • D. Brandrick
  • M. Atkinson
  • P. McNestry
  • B. Chappell
  • D. McIntosh
  • B. Hancock

Mrs. Gleig and Mr. Dennis are professional pensions managers from the TSB and the John Lewis Partnership respectively. Mr. Brandrick was formerly secretary of the British Coal Corporation. Mr. Atkinson is an assistant secretary in the DTI. All the above have been selected and appointed by me, in accordance with the scheme's rules.

Mr. McNestry is General Secretary of the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers. Mr. Chappell is a treasurer of the British Association of Colliery Management. Each has been appointed as trustee by his union.

Mr. McIntosh is a former senior accountant with British Coal. Mr. Hancock is General Secretary of the south Wales area of NACODS. Both were elected trustees by ballots of scheme members in their respective areas in September 1995.

Mrs. Gleig, as chairman, receives remuneration of £15,000 per annum. No remuneration is currently paid to other trustees.
