HC Deb 23 November 1995 vol 267 cc306-7W
Mrs. Ewing

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what controls are placed on pharmaceutical wholesalers to ensure that drugs intended for export are not sold domestically. [1578]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Under medicines legislation, wholesale dealer's licences are required for the export of medicinal products to countries which form part of the European Community or European economic area agreement. It is a condition of such licences that medicinal products are sold only to those who may legally sell or supply them by way of retail in the country concerned or are themselves holders of wholesale dealer's licences.

Wholesale dealer's licences are not required for the export of medicinal products to countries outside the European Community or European economic area agreement.

Any reports that medicinal products sold for export have been subsequently sold in the United Kingdom would be investigated by the Medicines Control Agency.
