HC Deb 22 November 1995 vol 267 c151W
Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the outstanding rail electrification schemes in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement. [1178]

Mr. Watts

Railtrack informs me that there are two outstanding electrification schemes on which implementation works are currently under way. They are Heathrow Express, and North London line electrification.

Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what was the total mileage of electrified railtrack in each of the last 20 years; what percentage of the network this represents; and if he will make a statement; [1177]

(2) what has been the increase in the electrification of the rail network in each of the last 20 years; what are the projected figures for the next five years; and if he would make a statement. [1179]

Mr. Watts

Railtrack informs me that approximately 30 per cent. of the 10,300 route miles in Britain are electrified using overhead and third rail systems. The other information is not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
