§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the recent ferry disaster in Thailand and its consequences for future maritime legislation. [344]
§ Mr. Norris[holding answer 20 November 1995]: The Government have made no formal assessment of the accident because it did not involve a UK-flagged ship and did not occur in United Kingdom waters. However, under the international convention for the safety of life at sea, the appropriate responsible administrations are required to investigate casualties where they judge that this may assist in determining what changes in rules are needed, and undertake to supply the International Maritime Organisation with pertinent information. The IMO makes this information available to members.
