HC Deb 21 November 1995 vol 267 c74W
Mr. Frank Cook

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many inquiries the energy technology support unit has received from the general public about renewable energy(a) in total since the energy technology support unit was established and (b) on average per year. [201]

Mr. Page

The energy technology support unit has received some 70,000 inquiries of all types since 1 April 1989, when the Renewable Energy Enquiries Bureau commissioned a database to record inquiries. Statistics for inquiries before that date are not available.

Since 1 April 1989, inquiries have averaged 12,000 annually across a range of correspondent types, with roughly 18 per cent. of inquiries coming from private individuals, 30 per cent. from commerce and industry and 45 per cent. from education; 7 per cent. were from other inquirers.

As renewable energy has moved to the marketplace, inquiries from companies have increased and, across the last two financial years—1993–94 and 1994–95—have averaged 39 per cent.—over 8,800—of the nearly 23,000 inquiries received.
