To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what measures are proposed to ensure that all school children are introduced to a major opera or ballet production during their school years. [495]

All of the opera and ballet companies in receipt of public subsidy are developing extensive education programmes aimed specifically at opening up their work to children at school. As part of an initiative recently announced by my right hon. Friend, I am about to consult widely on ways in which the Government and others can help to make the arts even more accessible.
