HC Deb 20 November 1995 vol 267 c40W
Mrs. Maddock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his estimate of the total number of local authority homes now sold in the United Kingdom, giving the total amount of money raised since 1983; and if he will make a statement. [453]

Mr. Clappison

In England, about 1.1 million local authority homes were sold for owner-occupation between January 1983 and June 1995. The money raised from those sales, after lending for council house purchase, is estimate to he over f16 billion.

In addition, there were more than 200,000 local authority sales to housing associations and other types of ownership in the same period. Information on the value of these sales before October 1988 is not available, but the net receipts of the 188,000 sales after this date is some £1.6 billion.

For information on sales elsewhere in the United Kingdom, I refer the hon. Member to the Secretaries of State for Wales, for Scotland and for Northern Ireland.
