Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to lift the ban covering the use of radio and television by the betting industry for the purpose of advertising its service. [502]

Mr. Kirkhope

Restrictions on the advertising of betting and other forms of commercial gambling in the broadcast and non-broadcast media are under review. There will be full public consultation before any decisions are made.

Mr. McAvoy

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment has been made of the impact of the national lottery on the betting industry; and if he will make a statement. [508]

Mr. Kirkhope

We are monitoring off-course betting turnover in order to assess the impact of the national lottery on the horserace betting levy, and plan to report our findings to Parliament in the spring of 1996.
