HC Deb 20 November 1995 vol 267 c42W
Mr. Steen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to ensure that persons from abroad who are registered with the Home Department as asylum seekers, and who have no entitlement to benefits, will not have access to publicly-funded housing assistance. [1536]

Mr. Curry

Under the Government's proposals for fairer access to local authority and housing association tenancies, persons from abroad who have no entitlement to benefits will be eligible neither for assistance under the homelessness legislation nor to register on a local housing authority waiting list. This includes people who have sought asylum after entry to United Kingdom, and those whose applications for asylum have been refused by the Home Secretary. We intend to bring forward legislation to implement our proposals in the new parliamentary Session.
