To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of the annual budget was spent by NHS trusts in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole on management, administrative and clerical staff in the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. [42000]

[holding answer 7 November 1995]: The accounts of NHS trusts for 1994–95 provide information on the cost of management and administration staff and board members. Based on the information contained in these accounts, the proportion of total annual income spent on management and administrative staff and board members by NHS trusts in (a) Strathclyde was 7.23 per cent. and (b) NHS trusts in Scotland as a whole was 7.12 per cent.
