HC Deb 08 November 1995 vol 265 cc934-5W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what has been the cost of ministerial transport in each of the past five years; what allowance has been paid to Ministers who use their own vehicles; and what has been the cost in each of the past five years. [40742]

Mr. Paice

Ministerial transport is provided to the Department by the government car service and no allowances have been paid to Ministers who use their own vehicles. The information requested, in respect of both the former Employment and Education Departments, is contained in the following table:

year Employment department costs £ Education department costs £
1990–91 171,198 134,191
1991–92 195,075 241,215
1992–93 216,352 217,197
1993–94 238,134 288,121
1994–95 236,062 274,377

1. The DFE figure for 1990–91 does not include the cost of using GCS to transport ministerial boxes.

2. During the five-year period, each of the former Departments had four ministerial cars on hire, except for the financial years 1991–92 and the first four months of 1994–95 when the Department for Education had five cars.
