HC Deb 08 November 1995 vol 265 cc1014-5W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people were in receipt of(a) invalidity benefit and (b) disability premium at the beginning of each of the last four financial years; how many people (i) in receipt of invalidity benefit and (ii) in receipt of disability premium were referred to a regional medical officer for a medical examination in each of the last four financial years; and how many were found to be (1) incapable of work, (2) fit for work within limits and (3) fit for work, for each Benefits Agency district office covering the postal districts of Doncaster and Mexborough. [39000]

Mr. Burt

I will write to the hon. Member shortly.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will give the cost of each medical examination carried out by his Department's medical officers on customers claiming sickness benefit for the first time, and the cost of each subsequent medical examination of customers in receipt of sickness benefit in his Benefits Agency's boundaries covering Doncaster and Mexborough for the year ended 31 March; how many(a) first-time and (b) other claimants' claims for sickness benefits were rejected on the basis of the examination medical officer's report; and if he will list the equivalent figures for the year ended 31 March 1994. [39473]

Mr. Burt

The information requested on the cost of each medical examination in Doncaster and Mexborough is not available. Information regarding the number of first time and other claimants' claims for sickness benefit in Doncaster and Mexborough which were rejected on the basis of the medical officer's report could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
