Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has for additional funding for Leeds prison to redress the serious financial difficulties facing the prison in 1997–98. [42251]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from David Scott to Mr. John Battle, dated 8 November 1995:

The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about Leeds prison.Financial provision for the public sector will be announced in the Autumn Statement due at the end of this month, and budgets for individual prisons will be finalised during the early part of 1996 taking into account their strategic plans.The Prison Service is committed to improved efficiency and unit cost reductions. A target of 8.6% was set out in the corporate plan published earlier this year and all prisons are expected to contribute to this.
