HC Deb 08 November 1995 vol 265 c878W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the international efforts in which he is participating to form an intergovernmental regime to do research on and control fishing of, deep-sea fish, where habits are relatively unknown. [39289]

Mr. Baldry

[holding reply 2 November 1995]: The UK participates in a range of intergovernmental bodies which promote research in, or control fishing for, deep sea fish. These bodies include the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization and the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission. This summer the UK played an active role in the UN conference on straddling stocks and highly migratory fish stocks. At the end of November, the Ministry will participate in an international workshop considering the comprehensiveness and consistency of global arrangements for management of the oceans.
