Mr. Pickthall

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the institutions in the north-west offering(a) agricultural and (b) horticultural training; and if he will make a statement on the nature of the courses; and if he will list the number of places offered and the number of vacancies. [41493]

Mr. Boswell

In the north-west of England, Myerscough college, Preston, and Newton Rigg college, Penrith, offer a variety of agricultural and horticultural courses leading to the attainment of degrees, diplomas, certificates and national vocational qualifications. A full list and details of the courses, including places offered and vacancies, can be obtained from the colleges themselves. Alternatively, the "Directory of Courses in Land-Based Industries", published by the farming press, contains comprehensive information on all full-time and sandwich courses currently available in the land-based industries.

Details of training courses and providers can be obtained from the Industry Training Organisation for Agriculture and Commercial Horticulture, ATB-Landbase Limited, based at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, CV8 2LG, telephone 01203 696996.
