To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much has been spent on spare parts for RAF Tornado aircraft each year for the past five years; and how much is in the estimates for this purpose in the current year. [41350]

The value of spares expenditure incurred for Tornado airframe and engine spares, avionics, special to type ground equipment and test sets for each of the past five years was as follows:

  • 1990–91: £176 million
  • 1991–92: £214 million
  • 1992–93: £200 million
  • 1993–94: £184 million
  • 1994–95: £161 million

The provision for the current year is £149 million.

These figures do not include details of expenditure in respect of local purchases, spares orders placed by commodity range managers and spares purchased from other nations under mutual supply support arrangements, which are not available centrally.
