Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what measures he proposes to reduce the number of sites of special scientific interest that are damaged by road developments; [40912]

(2) what assessment he has made of whether the current system of sites of special scientific interest provides sufficient protection for endangered habitats and rare wildlife species against new developments, including quarries; [40985]

(3) if he will make it his policy to develop a new system of measures to preserve a percentage of each endangered habitat and rare wildlife species in England, Scotland and Wales; [40986]

(4) what assessment he has made of whether the current system of sites of special scientific interest provides sufficient protection for endangered habitats and rare wildlife species; [40989]

(5) what assessment he has made of the extent to which new measures are needed to preserve a percentage of each endangered habitat and rare wildlife species in England, Scotland and Wales. [40991]

teamwork could make the industry significantly more competitive and productive. Sir Michael recommended that, overall, it would be realistic to set a target to achieve 30 per cent. savings in construction costs by the year 2000.
