HC Deb 07 November 1995 vol 265 c756W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of car accidents for the latest year for which figures are available, involve drivers who passed their driving test in the preceding 12 months. [41277]

Mr. Norris

The information is not available in this form but drivers aged 17 and 18 were involved in some 5 per cent. of all injury accidents during the period 1992–94.

Mr. Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent consideration he has given to the introduction of probationary driver plates to be displayed for a period on cars driven by newly qualified drivers. [41276]

Mr. Norris

I refer the hon. Member to the answer that I gave to the hon. Member for Gordon (Mr. Bruce) on 22 February,Official Report, column 188. We are keeping this issue under review but I have yet to see any conclusive evidence that P-plates are effective in reducing road accidents.
