To ask the Secretary of State for Health if expenditure on the national health service in 1995–96, in cash terms, will exceed the planned amount, as set out in the "Financial Statement and Budget Report, 1995–96"; and if he will make a statement. [41802]

Government spending on the national health service in 1995–96 is currently expected to be in line with the plan set out in the "Financial Statement and Budget Report".

(2) what has been the percentage change in real terms in expenditure on the national health service between 1979 and the current year. [41877]

Total national health service expenditure has risen from £6,273 million in 1978–79 to an estimated £31,974 million in 1995–96, an increase of 69.7 per cent. in real terms.
