§ Mr. WilkinsonTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he made to Mr. Santer of the European Commission that Mr. Peter Wilmott, Director General of Customs and Indirect Taxation at the European Committee, should be retained in post. [41404]
§ Mr. Heathcoat-Amory[holding answer 6 November 1995]: Neither my right hon. and learned Friend nor any other Treasury Minister made such representations. United Kingdom policy generally is to ensure that the number of senior posts in the European Commission held by British citizens reflects the UK's importance as a member of the European Union. In the light of Mr. Wilmott's departure, the UK is therefore seeking to maintain the number of posts filled by British citizens at that level within the Commission.
