To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much Government funding is being put into research intoE. coli 0157 in the current financial year; and what plans he has to increase the amount of Government-funded research into this bacteria. [41639]

The Government are spending just over £0.5 million on research intoE. coli 0157 in the current financial year and an overall total of nearly £1.5 million up to March 1998. Further substantial funding is planned over the next two to three years.
