HC Deb 07 November 1995 vol 265 c808W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to improve spoken English and Welsh in schools. [41316]

Mr. Richards

The revised national curriculum, in place from September 1995, sets clear targets for improvements in spoken English and Welsh. Progress against these targets is assessed at ages seven, 11 and 14 and at age 16 through the GCSE. Additionally, discussions will be held shortly with the Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales and the Welsh Joint Education Committee on recording grades of spoken English and Welsh on GCSE certificates.
