To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many pupils qualified for NVQs in(a) retail, (b) manufacturing, (c) the car industry, (d) fast fit cars, (e) golf, (f) restaurants, (g) travel agents, (h) tailoring, and (i) equine activities in each of the last five years. [38795]

To ask the Secretary for State for Education and Employment what is the percentage of the relevant age group in each EU country which has passed a national vocational qualification type qualification in each of the past five years. [38797]

The total number of national vocational qualifications awarded in the UK between their launch and the end of 1994 is about 758,000 according to figures supplied by NCVQ. Data are not available on the number of individuals gaining such awards; nor are data available in a comparable form for other EU member countries.

Total NVQs awarded in the United Kingdom to 31 December 1990: 58,294; total awarded in 1991: 111,235; total awarded in 1992: 152,114; total awarded in 1993: 202,426; and total awarded in 1994: 239,780.
