To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the(a) lowest and (b) highest full-time salary paid to any employee in his (i) Department, (ii) agencies and (iii) non-departmental public bodies in (1) 1994–95 and (2) 1995–96. [40822]

It is the Government's normal policy to publish civil servants' salaries in bands.

1 1995–96 salary dependant on the Government who are expected to implement the recommendations of the Remuneration Committee.

The remuneration of the highest paid employees of non-departmental public bodies include a performance bonus awarded retrospectively, so it is not possible to provide an accurate figure for 1995–96. The highest paid employee in 1994–95 received £117,000 inclusive of a performance-related element. Information on the lowest pay rates is not held centrally.
