The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking, how many male prisoners are currently serving life sentences for rape; and how many of this group are repeat offenders.The latest available information is for 31 December 1994. On that date there were 188 males in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales serving a life sentence for rape. Information on the number of repeat offenders is not immediately available. I will write to you again with this information as soon as possible.
