To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the change in the incidence of cases of malaria reported in the United Kingdom during the last 12 months; and if he will make a statement. [39501]

The cases reported to the malaria reference laboratory of the public health laboratory service and the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine for the United Kingdom for the period August 1994 to July 1995 are shown in the table.

These figures reflect the seasonal pattern in the numbers of United Kingdom citizens visiting malarious regions. The Government recommend that all travellers to malarious areas should seek advice from their doctor on measures to prevent malaria, including the use of appropriate prophylaxis.
