To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if he will list the centres and the sports concerned in the awarding of national vocational qualifications. [25043]

Mr. Sproat

Thirty-three sports were included in a pilot project to establish national vocational qualification centres.

These are:

  • archery
  • association football
  • athletics
  • badminton
  • basketball
  • bowls
  • canoeing
  • cricket
  • cycling
  • dinghy sailing
  • 720
  • exercise and fitness
  • fencing
  • gymnastics
  • hockey
  • judo
  • mountaineering
  • movement and dance
  • netball
  • orienteering
  • rowing
  • rugby league
  • rugby union
  • skiing
  • squash
  • sub aqua
  • surfing
  • swimming
  • table tennis
  • target shooting
  • tennis
  • trampolining
  • volleyball

Currently, there are 12 fully approved centres in the following sports:

  • association football
  • swimming
  • hockey
  • gymnastics
  • tennis
  • basketball
  • karate
  • yachting

A number of other centres are in line for approval by the end of this year.

National vocational qualifications will not be awarded in the category "martial arts". There are eight different recognised martial arts, each with varying styles and techniques and each has to be treated separately in its
