HC Deb 25 May 1995 vol 260 cc662-3W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to the oral statement of the Minister of State, the hon. Member for Eddisbury (Mr. Goodlad) of 20 December 1994,Official Report, column 1535, how many people have benefited from the tailored training courses provided by the Ministry of Defence for those affected by the drawdown of the Gibraltar garrison; and if he will make a statement. [26267]

Mr. Soames

To ease the impact of reductions in the garrison, the Ministry of Defence in Gibraltar provides training and retraining opportunities for its locally entered civilian staff. Courses are conducted either internally or by employing external educational authorities for vocational training. They include driver instruction, information technology, management, administration and engineering, all of which are recognised by the Gibraltar Government as valuable skills for future employment. Some 250 personnel have so far benefited from these training initiatives.
