HC Deb 25 May 1995 vol 260 c663W
Ms Hodge

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence for each piece of work subject to a building process under the auspices of(a) the Ministry of Defence and (b) agencies for which the Ministry of Defence is responsible, where work was carried out, who were the successful bidders, and which contracts were won by in-house bidders in (1) 1993–94 and (2) 1994–95 and (3) 1995–96. [25498]

Mr. Freeman

The MOD assumed responsibility for the management and procurement of its works services from the PSA in April 1990. This was a new sphere of activity for the Department for which it had no in-house capacity. To meet this requirement, MOD set up Defence Works Services to act as its intelligent customer capability.

All of the information requested is not available centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, it is possible to provide details of works contracts placed by my Department for construction projects, each costing more than £24,000, excluding VAT.

Contracts Value (inc. VAT) £ million
a)1993–94 568 720
b) 1994–95 479 545
c) 1995–96 22 125
Note:
1 April 1995 only.

My Department has no in-house capability for construction contracts and therefore there are no in-house bids.

Details of MOD works requirements are published fortnightly in the "Works Services Opportunities" bulletin—an example of which has been placed in the House of Commons Library—which is widely available on subscription.
