Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average cost per person screened on the national health service breast screening programme. [26025]

Mr. Sackville

The estimated average cost per person screened under the national health service breast screening programme in England in 1993–94 was £27.

Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what amount the national health service breast screening programme spends on screening women 65 years or over; and what percentage of the total budget this is. [26024]

Mr. Sackville

It is estimated that in 1993–94 in England, about £1.4 million, representing 5 per cent, of the total breast cancer screening budget, was spent on testing women aged 65 years or over for breast cancer.
