HC Deb 24 May 1995 vol 260 cc609-11W
Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will provide an analysis and examples of the family types and occupational groups who appear in the top 10 per cent, of the income distribution. [26387]

Mr. Lilley

In 1991–92, the latest period for which figures are available, there were 5.7 million people in the top tenth of the income distribution in the UK, of whom 13 per cent, were pensioners, 41 per cent, couples without children, 26 per cent, couples with children and 19 per cent, single, all after housing costs.

Analysis of the patterns of personal disposable income throughout the UK income distribution will be included in the next edition of households below average income statistics, covering the period 1979 to 1992–93, which will be published on Friday 2 June.
