HC Deb 23 May 1995 vol 260 c539W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if she will list by local education authority those secondary schools which are grant maintained, giving for each the number of pupils with a statement of special educational needs for each year since the school became grant-maintained. [25678]

Mr. Robin Squire

The information requested will take a little time to assemble. I will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible and place a copy in the Library.

Statements of special educational needs are drawn up by the local education authority and name the school which the pupil in question should attend, taking account of parents' preferences and consultation with the schools' governors. A grant-maintained school can neither draw up a statement itself nor refuse admission to a pupil whose statement names that school.
