HC Deb 23 May 1995 vol 260 cc555-6W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to allow radioactive waste from the nuclear power industry to be accepted by local landfill disposal sites. [25773]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

This is one of the issues being considered in the current review of radioactive waste management policy, as part of which a major consultation exercise was undertaken last autumn. The Government's conclusions on this matter and other aspects of radioactive waste management policy will be published in a White Paper in the summer.

Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the local landfill disposal sites that accept low level radioactive waste for disposal; and if he will make a statement about the sources of such waste. [25775]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

In Wales only one landfill site has been authorised for this purpose—Cilgwyn quarry, near Caernarfon. The very small amounts of waste involved have come from the university sector and have been regulated in accordance with the Radioactive Substances Act 1993.
