To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) further to the recent report of the Police Complaints Authority, how many police officers were allowed to retire early on medical grounds while facing disciplinary charges in each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement; [25015]

(2) how many police officers facing disciplinary charges retired early on medical grounds in each of the last five years. [25740]

In 1993, 39 officers retired on the grounds of ill health during the course of investigations into their conduct or whilst facing disciplinary action or criminal proceedings.

The information available on punishments resulting from disciplinary hearings, including those originating from a complaint, will appear in the Home Office's annual statistical bulletin on police complaints and discipline, which is expected to be published in June.

Information on the types of complaint which resulted in disciplinary action recorded by the Police Complaints Authority in 1994 will appear in the authority's annual report, which is due to be published shortly.
