HC Deb 22 May 1995 vol 260 c465W
Mr. Frank Cook

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the estimated amount of tax fraud in each year since 1979. [23673]

Sir George Young

No official estimates have been made, but the annual yield from the Inland Revenue's counter-evasion and anti-avoidance work rose from £137.9 million in 1979–80 to £1,609.6 million in 1993–94.

A significant part of this arises from improved targeting of cases and more effective working methods.
