To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what has been the average fare increase between 1985 and 1995. [23892]

The answer depends on the mode of transport being considered. Between March 1985 and March 1995, the average increase above inflation in rail fares, as measured by the retail prices index, was 2.3 per cent. Bus and coach fares increased by an annual average of 1.9 per cent.
