HC Deb 22 May 1995 vol 260 c426W
Mr. Alan W. Williams

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what were the United Kingdom's(a) base load and (b) peak electricity demands during 1994. [27276]

Mr. Eggar

The simultaneous maximum demand for electricity in the United Kingdom met during the winter 1993–94 was 54.8 GW and during the winter of 1994–95 was 52.4 GW. The lowest demand met in the UK during the year 1994 was 20.2 GW. Base load varies according to season, with the minimum load on the day of maximum winter demand almost twice the minimum load in mid-summer. There is thus no single measurement for base load.
