HC Deb 22 May 1995 vol 260 c461W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what representations he has received from the World Wide Fund for Nature concerning breaches of faith in relation to the Government's creation of alternative bird reserves to mitigate the loss of wading birds' habitat in Cardiff bay. [25282]

Mr. Redwood

The director of the World Wide Fund for Nature (UK) wrote to me on 22 February 1994 seeking a meeting to discuss the progress made on the Cardiff bay barrage scheme and associated bird compensation measures. A meeting involving officials from my Department, Cardiff Bay development corporation and the WWF about the Government's commitment to the undertakings given to Parliament was held on 27 June 1994.

Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what further progress he has to report on the proposal to spend £5.8 million on the Gwent levels to create bird reserves to mitigate the loss of wading birds from Cardiff bay. [25269]

Mr. Redwood

Cardiff Bay development corporation has completed a site options study. This has been considered by a working group comprising representatives from the Countryside Council for Wales, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Land Authority for Wales. More detailed investigations are being undertaken to determine which sites present the best options. These should be completed by September.
