To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local authority houses have been built in England and Wales in the last 12 months for which figures are available. [23226]

Local authorities in England and Wales completed about 1,000 dwellings in the 12 months from April 1994 to March 1995.

§ 39. Mr. Nigel Griffiths
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what funding is available in this financial year for the improvement of council housing estates. [23229]

§ Mr. Curry
Under the housing investment programme and other programmes, over £1.2 billion has been allocated to local authorities for 1995–96; a number of the programmes lever in additional resources from the private sector.
Local authorities also fund capital expenditure on housing from usable capital receipts and revenue contributions to capital.
It is up to each local authority to decide how to use its allocation on the basis of local needs.
