To ask the Secretary of State for Education if she will list for each year since 1979(a) the number and (b) the percentage of qualified physical education teachers in (i) primary and (ii) secondary schools. [23669]

The information requested for secondary schools is available only for 1984, 1988 and 1992 from the secondary school staffing surveys. In those years the number of full-time teachers who were teaching physical education in maintained secondary schools in England and who had a post-A-level qualification in physical education was as follows:
